What struck me was that many people around the world consume considerably more than the 2000-2200 calories usually given as a guideline to Americans, yet few are obese.  Being a subsistence farmer or a small biz owner who works 7 days a week will burn off the calories better than sitting at a computer or watching TV, I guess.
