Title: Burned out. I've said many times,
Post by: terry on October 28, 2010, 08:10:59 PM
I've said it many times that I was burned out. I finally found a solution.

I stopped working six nights and now only work Friday and Saturday evenings. This is a much better arrangement. I found I really miss Television. A lot of good shows on, unlike the reality TV stuff I saw in the late '90s.

House MD: Awesome
Fringe: Was Awesome
Man Vs Food: Awesome
River Monsters: Awesome
Bert the Conqueror: Awesome
Family Guy: Have you guys seen this show? It is insane. I thought I'd hate it, but it is awesome.
Bizarre Foods: Awesome and disgusting at the same time.
Food Channel: Not awesome, I can't really put my finger on why I don't like it.
Hell's Kitchen: Retarded.

Man Vs Food: Awesome

Alton Brown excoriated this show and Adam, calling what he does "disgusting" in light of world hunger.
But anecdotally, he is said to really dislike people who aren't thin. Hence his current semi-gaunt look attained after dieting.
Conversely, I enjoy the show. Glad you've found it. Keep an eye out for Top Chef Masters, which should be starting up soon.

I like AB's show...but i have to say he has become really strange looking. He looks skeletal. My wife, who never watches his shows, saw him on Next Iron Chef, and said "is he sick?"

I was wondering the same myself - looks like some chemo folks I know.

According to what I've read, he purposefully went on a rigorous diet because he felt he had ballooned up.
He is becoming less and less tolerant of "fat" people and what he sees as an overindulgent food culture. He says he feels much better with less weight on him.

seems like he's gone too far though.

Converts pray louder. Yes, Alton seems to have gone overboard with the weight loss, and that remark about Man vs. Food was awfully judgemental, but give him some credit for taking charge of his life and taking a stand against the often ridiculous overindulgence of modern American dining.  Some of those MvF challenges look downright sadistic, yet I can't look away, like it's a car wreck.

I'll be a dissenter here and say I despise Family Guy.  Not only does it blatantly plagiarize The Simpsons, it's consistently lazy, repetitive and unfunny.  Random pop culture references are not the same as jokes, as South Park (which I love) astutely pointed out. There are more laughs in an average Flintstones episode.  Well, the ones without Gazoo.

I used to really enjoy Alton's humor, but his weight loss seems to have accompanied a more acerbic, pedantic, humorless quality that characterizes not only Good Eats, but everything else in which he appears. This is not the "local foodie done good" that I enjoyed a few years ago.

Now I cringe when his gaunt, leering mug suddenly appears and disappears in periodic lower screen corner plugs for upcoming shows.

I'll admit I often feel guilty about being an unabashed foodie in a world where so many are starving. This is Alton's concern.

But my problem with him is he has gotten so judgmental. I have enough guilt about being over my healthy weight without him troweling it on.
