Spam/ Virus Possibility
« on: January 18, 2011, 06:42:42 PM »
Greetings All,
Just so you know, If you (like me) saw all the question marks in the Postings Guidelines block, and the opened it (like I did) the other day, (my bad) I made a note and fired it off to the Admin. A brief note below is what I sent and the reply.

Greetings Admin!

WTF was that post that was listed on Posting Guidlines with all the question marks and smily faces? Since I opened it and looked at it, and saw that that person was listed at the bottom of the page as being on line (in the users online area), have I just recieved some kind of Virus thingy? Now it is gone (Thank You very much)!
Regards,
MadBob

It was spam Bob... Don't open those things.   I removed the post, banned the user and put him, his IP address, his email address and other contact info on a world wide database that lists those kind of losers..

Sorry you caught a virus, but trust me, I wade through 30 or so of those a week and I'm NEVER tempted to see the URL..

MwS]-   Did you get the virus off of your computer ?

You could send a warning to the other users if you like?

Have you ever listened to someone for a while and wondered, who ties your shoelaces?

You can't do epic shit with basic people.

Maybe I'm a little naive (only been working on computers/software for over 28 years) but I don't see how anyone could get a virus from just viewing a posting on a message board.  Now if you make the mistake of clinking a link in that posting...

I have been MIA for a few days.  Somehow my home computer was hit with Win XP Home Security 2012. It is a scareware program that is the devil to root out and destroy. Thanks to Malwarebytes and Flyin Brian's hands on my computer it is now gone.  I still have not established internet connection on that computer so my emails are way behind and I have just not been interested in leaning on CP's computer to keep hooked-up.

I personally think that the folks that make those programs should be shot, then burned, then hung.    Merry Christmas

No porn here, and Flyin Brian fixed my computer last night.  He is a National resource.  He said it WAS a tricky fix so I don't feel quite so dumb about not being able to do it myself.

The virus had deleted or name-changed some drivers or something, maybe he will chime in and tell what it was ?

A rootkit hijacked the Netbios over TCP/IP device/service.  The rootkit cleaner, TDDSKiller, removed the rootkit but didn't clean up the mess.  Long story short, the registry was pointing to the wrong location for the driver, NetBT.sys.  I posted a step-by-step fix on CNet's forum.
