Charleston / Isle of Palms, SC - Need recs.
« on: July 11, 2010, 09:53:29 PM »
Going to the beach next week at Isle of Palms with the inlaws. Inlaws will watch the daughter for wife and I to go to Charleston for dinner.
I've read so many good reviews of places i don't know where to go!
So far i've read: Hanks, Charleston Grill, Mcrady's, SNOB, FIG.

What do you guys think? Also any child friendly recs around Isle of Palms or is everything in Charleston?

What about fish markets for nice fresh local fish?

I went to Charleston Memorial Day weekend. We went to McCrady's, Magnolia and Fig. All were very good but the stand out restaurant was F.I.G. Do not go to Charleston without going to F.I.G.

That does look good:  http://www.eatatfig.com/

I've also wanted to try "Closed for Business" for a more casual option with a small nice looking menu, but mostly because I like the name!   http://www.closed4business.com/

We were in Isle of Palms last August.  There are only a few restaurants physically on the island.  There is a small seafood shop.

Only had dinner one night in Charleston.  McCrady's was good but I wasn't wowed the way I was expecting.

Red Hen on St. John's is wonderful -- Southern food with a french twist
Red Drum in Mt. Pleasant  -- gastropub
Fig is fantastic but be warned -- the noise level is cacaphonous.

Now I remember.  The seafood shop on Isle of Palms is on the northeast corner of Isle of Palms Connector/14th Ave and Palm Blvd. Didn't buy anything there.  We got shrimp from one of the little operations under the Shem Creek bridge in Mt Pleasant.

BTW, there is a small market at the Isle of Palms Marina.  Expensive and closes early.

Go to The Citadel Mess Hall for lunch or dinner, then anyplace you go after that will be excellent.

The restaurant where the party boat ties up at Shem Creek is usually where we ate in the past - haven't been there for about a year, however. I don't go out to Isle of Palms anymore.

You mean the Wreck?  I found it to be highly overrated and not all that inexpensive considering that you're eating with paper & plastic.

Friends went for lunch and enjoyed it.

the chef at Cypress is a charcuterie freak (read: he pulled out some salami out of his jacket while we were having cocktails at the W after Cochon) and reads your blog Jason.

FIG is damn good. McCrady's lobster legs with sweetbreads....

If we have a chance we'll stop by Cypress as well.
