Title: Update as I go along building a message board for you.
Post by: Mike GadgetGeek Stock on October 21, 2009, 05:02:54 PM
Here is hoping that we together can build a safe landing place for foodies here in Atlanta and elsewhere to talk about the food they cook at home, and to review the places they eat, and to further discuss whatever we all can be comfortable with. I am NOT a pro at this, and some things will change rapidly initially until I get a feel for how this all works.

But here goes.   Know from the outset that I DO LIKE message boards and encourage both banter and serious talk about anything.  Let's all stick with the Categories and Threads until we flesh this whole thing out and get up and moving.  I/we have some interesting ideas about some things we can add on down the road to make this both an interesting read and a tool that you can use to decide where to go and eat out. We will only succeed with your help.

Let none of us get too far off course, or too far off the thread, and please review your posts.  Be adult about all of this and we will get along fine.  I am working on a Mission Statement, and posting guidelines that we can all live with.

Please submit any suggestions here or by PM to me or the Admin or Moderators.

In agreement with another poster, perhaps the names of the restaurant sections can be modified. I suggest slimming down to:

Metro Atlanta
Rest of Georgia
Rest of the World

Ah much easier.

All we need is Atl61 to come out of retirement and we've come full circle.

You da man.

Except maybe every BOA/Lower Chattanooga thread currently squatting in "Rest of Georgia" I'd put in Metro. That would be all of them. I don't think we've had a post on a place outside the metro area.

Okay, okay...   a long time ago I had a big file folder and it was labeled "stuff".  Those folks that know me understand why I like to compartment things.   I moved 'em all.  I may not be as fast all of the time, but you had/have my attention today.

On the main forum page, why bold the "Last post" words? It gets distracting with the bold of "Last Post" on all the threads, and "Today" or "Yesterday" on some of the posts.

I am not sure that they are bolded by intent but more by system default.  We haven't figured out all the nooks and crannies of the software especially the design aspect. Hopefully, I will have a bit more time after the holidays to figure it out.

Why is the default setting such that when you make a post, you go immediately back to the post index for the category, instead of going back to look at the thread where you just made your post?

It's not a necessary change, but I do kind of like to make one last look at my posts after they are posted to check for errors, but with this setting I'd have to re-click on the thread to go back and look at it.

Still, isn't it great to be able to edit posts?  :)

Edited to add: Gadgetgeek, you need to set a limit to how long people can edit or remove their posts. 2 days is fine.

You can change it to return to the thread. There's an option in your profile.

Check the box labeled: Return to topics after posting by default

In the old AC board there was a list of 10 or so posts that were most recent in the Forum Stats area.  Is there a way to show that again?  It was helpful to see the posts that were made since I had visited last.

As you peek around and learn this not-too-different software, be aware that you can change your "theme" in your profile area.

Not that it changes much, but it is a bit of adaptability that the folks at SMF have added to individual profiles.

I have a question about posting photos.

I always save mine 9" wide at 72 dpi. Then I save for web and downsize the quality percentage in Photoshop to get required file size. My photos come in very small when I post them and you have to click on them to get a larger size. Some of the photos others post seem to be full size. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

Hmmm  never had an issue..  I let Outlook resize the pictures I'm going to post, ( I right click the picture and send it to an email recipient, copy and the paste the picture in a designated folder and rename it so I can tell it from the original size one ).   They seem to come out good that way without me having to open up Photoshop or some other picture management software?

Also, let me see what the guys at SMF have to say?

Andy, I use Picasa (free) and upload to an album that I've set as public.  When I click a photo then select "link to this photo", it gives me a link (after I cut off everything but the actual address) that I can insert here using the insert image button... and it lets me choose the size.

I'm having a problem with posting messages of a certain length, beyond the parameters of the display window. I can keep typing past the bottom, but I cannot see it as I'm typing, except for every time I hit enter, or get to a new line.

Could be for posts with quoted material, or maybe not, but I think that would be where to look first.

As soon as I upgrade my computer, I am going to load Picasa and use it as a photo-management tool.  CP loaded it onto my Son's computer in Ohio, and did some overnight face-recognition that was pretty dern slick..   I have a half of Terabit of pictures, and except for dating the folders I have no real management system or retrieval system. I hope it works?

The links to both Flickr and Facebook will also be useful.

Expanding the perimeter of your culinary knowledge.

Expanding the perimeter of your food knowledge.

Expanding the perimeter of your Atlanta food/culinary knowledge. To make it more location specific, of course.

For some reason "knowledge" doesn't quite seem to roll off the tongue, but I can't think of a better word right now.  I like the use of "perimeter" in there somewhere though.

If they can't see that it's there, how will they know there is an incentive for them to register and log in?

I do think that it would be nice to encourage visitors to register, whether they end up posting or not, because then we can get a good idea of how many people use this board on a regular basis. What's the best way to encourage this?

Ok, question for 'ya Mike... and I'm not sure if this is user error or something intentional on your side:

There are some threads that are "pinned", such as the coming soon thread.  Have I pinned it, if so how do I unpin it?  I've seen a couple threads pinned and not sure I understand the reason.

I've long ago conceded that I take my breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, supper, and midnight snack way too seriously. But when it comes to debating things like debating "foodie" or "is food art?" I will leave that for people who take themselves too seriously. That's a line I won't cross. I'm too busy eating.

Sounds like a PC owner. I remember being in the Dark Ages myself.

And I have a NEW Ipad sitting here unused,  I am just reluctant to learn a new interface after just getting used to Win8....

It was NOT, NOT, NOT fixed..      after a complete tear-down it was a faulty switch, on the front of the computer..

cost:

2 motherboards
2 CPU's  ( one salvagable )
WEEKS of downtime that made me work on an ASUS tablet
A Room AC unit that now keeps our office at 62º so I have to wear a jacket
One of the MB's is salvageable, the other somehow got it's processor pins bent on the install, it is junk and has never booted up.

The switch was $14.00, the rewiring was $11.00

But now this bad puppy flies.

This is the first post on it since I just plugged it in..     6:01pm  10/27/14

Dear God, please let this thing work..

Owning a Mac....priceless. For everyone else, there's MasterCard.
