Title: Re: Dan Loker = KoPP R.I.P.
Post by: Mike GadgetGeek Stock on September 01, 2011, 11:39:02 PM

My good friend and board member has passed away.   Dan Loker - KoPP has died, I am told, of an accidental, self inflicted gun shot.  I know almost nothing more than that, but other good friends of his on the board can offer what information they evolve about this tragedy.   Dan was in my wedding, and has shared a pint of beer or a meal with us so many times we have lost count.  We were with him last week at Miso Isakaya, and I talked to him on the phone on Tuesday about his Labor Day plans.  He honestly seemed in good spirits and was looking forward to being a more healthy person after his back surgery.  I am stunned.

Long live the King of the Pig People.

I can still remember my first exposure to KoPP at the sushi bar at Soto.  I'd read his postings on ART and AC before then.

Oh, dear. I am still shell-shocked and horrified over this. I considered him my friend for more than 7 years, and we dated for a short time. I cannot wrap my mind around him being gone. If there is a service, I will certainly be there.

I am hopeful that he is no longer in pain, and I wish him to be in peace.

Just to fill in a bit more, Dan's neighbor told my husband yesterday that Dan thought he heard an intruder and grabbed his gun, which did not have the safety on. Evidently it went off. Housekeeper was there at the time and called 911. I don't know if this is 100% accurate.

I first met Dan at the AC Blais outing many years ago. I think we met for meals at about a half-dozen places thereafter. Also, he was certainly a fixture at Iris when I went there many a time.

I enjoyed the meals and drinks I had with him and was thinking of those times since GG told me the horrid news last night.

Dan was a good guy.

Such sad news. :'( Dan's appreciation of foods and knowledge of the Atlanta dining scene amazed me.  I only had lunch with Dan once, a year or so back but found him to be a pleasant guy.  He brought a 12 pack for us all to share (well, we didn't drink all of it... ;)).  Of course his banter here on the board was always respected and informative.  He will be greatly missed here and surely elsewhere.

Now this is sad.

I left a job back in January where Dan was a client of ours.  He was nothing but kind and professional both on the phone and in email chats with me and the few times he came into the office.  I knew he was a "foodie" but not much else on the personal front.  Really nice guy.

I have been mostly a lurker on this board and also the previous board for years now and always enjoyed KoPP's posts.  They were informative and respectful.

Until today I had no idea they were connected.  What a loss, and a shame.  It's obvious from the response here my interactions with him were not a coincidence.  He will be missed.

I feel that you I think I have post again as I did very early this morning. That post just to reply to the shock of reading Mikes initial post.

I lost a friend today and my sole is hurting. I don't care what caused Dan's death. The I lost a good dear friend today and I miss him. We met most recently at Hal's for dinner and even though the pain got to him early in we still had a good time.

Early on in our friendship we met a Christmas party at a member of the old AJCs board and when I got to him had this kind of funny look on his face. It seems that that he just had along involved conversation about restaurants with a man who when he went to say that to say hello to someone who else, Dan was informed about that then man he was talking to was non other than John Kessler. Once you he found out, Dann couldn't stop smiling.

If you there is  to be a memorial, I suggest we all meet at the Belgium Bar of the Brickstore to hoist. A drink in his memory.

I lost a friend today and it hurts....

From Jim Skinner on Facebook

Quote
From conversations with Dan's family and other close friends, just this evening: It has been conclusively established that Dan passed away as result of a freak discharge of a loaded gun, a discharge that he inadvertently caused. He was severely wounded in the stomach and was already unconscious by the time he was taken by EMS to Grady Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Information received tonight indicates intent for a memorial/ funeral service in Atlanta. Details will follow as soon as possible on the arrangements

This is Jim Loker, Dan's brother from Michigan.  My brother Tom and I have read all of the kind postings about our brother and want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers.  He did pass away on Sept. 1 after his gun accidentaly discharged while he was making his bed.  He had underwent extensive back surgery in April and was just cleared to return to work on Sept. 5.  If you can make it to the funeral, we are planning on having a light lunch after.  Please email me so I can have a rough number.  Also, if you could email me any stories, anecdotes, musings on my brother, I will compile them and send them back to anyone that would want it.  My email address is lokerj@bronsonhg.org.  Thank you again and this will be the final posting of KoPP.

I just wanted to add a couple more thoughts. We just returned from a weekend in New Orleans, and it was hard not to think about him frequently while we were there, because he loved that kind of food so much - gumbo, red beans and rice, fresh seafood - and it would have been great to share our experiences there with him. I did have an extra drink or three in his honor.  :)

I also first met Dan in person at the Blais dinner in 2003-4? Not sure the exact date, but I remember that he was having a drink with Gr8Waiter and after observing me for a few minutes, he quickly guessed who I was without even speaking to me first. That was a terrific meal, and it was followed by many other wonderful meals that we shared, either in a group or just between the two of us.

One evening we met for dinner at Panahar and he brought a terrific bottle of dry Riesling for us to share. He had excellent taste in wine, beer, port, food, movies. . . During dinner, he expressed his affection for me, and he was more than a little tipsy at the time, but I knew he was sincere. I was in a relationship at the time, so I couldn't return the sentiment. Later, after linehog and I broke up, I approached him and asked if he wanted to take our friendship in a different direction. We had a few dates, and I remember on our third date, he took me to Gumbeaux's and treated me to lunch. Afterward, he took me to Patak where I picked out a slab of bacon, some Hungarian salami, bratwurst and other goodies. At the register, he paid for my purchase for me. Later, looking at my big bag of sausages, I thought to myself, "Not exactly a subtle gift, but it sure beats the heck out of flowers and candy."

Dan was a good man, and he will certainly be missed. I look forward to seeing many of you at the memorial so we can share more stories. He would want us to be happy in remembrance of him.

God...My wife and I were supposed to have dinner with Dan this week. I hadn't heard from him and was wondering why. I never would have imagined this.

Dan was easily one of the nicest, most genuine people I've ever met. If you were in the restaurant biz in this town, he likely knew your name. It's so hard to wrap my mind around the idea of him being gone. I think his death is so inconceivable because of how much he loved people, loved food, loved drink, loved LIFE. Even after his most recent back surgery, when we took him out to eat and he was clearly in tons of pain, his sense of humor and acerbic but genuine sense of optimism remained intact.

Like Foodgeek, we were in New Orleans the weekend before last and my last memory of Dan will be of him sending us an email directing us to Coop's Place in the Quarter for the best jambalaya and red beans and rice we have had in our many trips down there. Just another in a long list of his spot-on recommendations.

I didn't drink beer before I met Dan, but years ago he sat me down at the bar of Brickstore's Belgian Room and took it upon himself, with the help of the bartender, to give me an education. I literally cannot tip a glass without thinking of him, and I'm sure I never will.

Bottoms up and happy trails, my friend. You will be sorely missed.

EDIT: My wife and I would like to attend the service tomorrow and will probably stay for the luncheon, as work allows.

This is a deeply felt loss. Dan, THE KoPP was one of the most active on the board and perhaps the hungriest of the bunch.
His posts were always those of a person in love with all facets of cuisine and food culture. He was never of the overly
argumentative or snarky members, in fact he could always be relied upon as a voice bringing things back to the food or the beer itself.
The community here is one that goes back many years, and in such a way that we do feel as if we are close to one another.
This is how I felt about Dan, a closeness like that of a secret society except it is there for all the world to see.
The heaviness of this event is met with such a sadness that I am at odds to express.

I have family and friends who have had back  surgery and each has nothing good to say about the operation or the two years afterwards. The physical pain felt in recovery is at the top of the pain chart. Powerful medications can make a person somewhat less aware of their actions and accidents are very easy to happen. My heart and prayers to the protector of Chefs, Saint Lawrence, go out for our great friend, KoPP. Dan was a friend and supporter to Chefs all over Atlanta, and if he liked your food he really liked your food. I trust that he is surrounded by a banquet of the finest Berkshire and Blackfoot hogs with all the darkest of stouts available to feast upon with the Friars of old. And though I feel his passing with adoration for a man of cuisine,  I also shed a few tears for a "family" member gone.
Farewell to man whose actions were kind, his observations well thought, and his love of the banquet of life unparalleled.

Thanks for your nice words toward me Robin.
As a past participant of AC and many wonderful dinners, I too remember fondly meeting Dan on Mother's Day at Iris, where I was with my family. Also met International Grubber and his family. After typing alongside with these 2 guys for so long, when I first met them, I assumed one was the other.

But it didn't take long for us to start talking about the bbq culture of Memphis vs. Atlanta, and Kopp knew a lot.

Then we had the chance to meet up with him and others at his home, where he taught us about Belgian Beers. I was not familiar with that part of town and got lost on my way home. I got pretty  much turned around and ended up at a Taco Bell to use the restroom, and ate a bean burrito. Don't tell anyone. I always wondered what he did with the few lbs. of cheese straws I left at his house. : )

I then met Robin, Kopp, and others at Smith's. Funny as I was just chatting with the owner's Brother, Nelson, Saturday at Padriacs. Anyway, I was telling him about Dan and he was sure he had to of known him both through Smith's and Fox Bros.

I will never forget the time, somehow before the Groupon days, I think we had a free meal at Iris. We asked Dan to join us. I had my younger daughter with me, and when I asked her yesterday if she remembered Dan and the meal, she said ''oh the computer guy". I still haven't conveyed to her about his accident. Back to the coupon, he acted like he was one of us three and we split the bill in 4ths using our coupon. He was just so generous it made you want to adopt him and take him home. I remember he bought me an digestif that tasted kind of nasty I choked at the table. I forgot what it was. But he was just sharing his knowledge.

Anyway, can't top these last posts. Just wanted to stop  by and say hi. I understand the pain he went through, and the long road one goes through healing, as I had bilateral knee replacement surgery almost exactly 2 years ago. And it's a process no one can understand becoming almost crippled and trying to live a normal life again.

One last thing, is Kopp was a very smart guy. I think some of us tried to put up a makeshift Jeapordy game against Atlanta61 as they could carry on a good banter.

To Dan's family and good friends, I am very sorry for your loss.

Helen

I am so saddened by this; he was such a wonderful member of both the restaurant community and boards, and simply a good citizen of the world. His kindness will be remembered by so many; like Greggie, he touched the world and left it a better place by simply being in it.

Sorry I couldn't attend the memorial but was there in spirit.  I'm the lady who made the chole that JaMo spilled on Dan's carpet all those years ago. :P

I have many fond memories of Dan and I having lunch or a chat, sometimes just the two of us, sometimes with other good friends. Always a pleasure to be with and he'll be greatly missed.

It was a really nice service. The Catholics know how to say farewell. Although, as I quipped to the forum folks in attendance, I think in lieu of swinging a censer, a miniature Big Green Egg on a chain would have been more apropos. ;)

We saw Mike, Codepoet, rwcohen, Foodgeek (thanks for the delicious homemade cookies!!!), EDIT: The Scientist (Knew you were there. Just dumb oversight. Sorry!), geonuc, and barnum (did I miss anyone?). At lunch afterward, Mike broke out the ABT St. Bernardus No. 12, which just about broke my heart and brought a tear to my eye, because that is the very brew that Dan introduced me to in the Belgian Room all those years ago and is still my favorite.

In between relating favorite recollections of Dan, we hit upon several ways in which we hope to honor his memory.

1) A wake/farewell to be held at Fox Bros.

2) I'd like to get a stool in the Belgian Room dedicated in his honor.

3) Design and distribute a "Friend of Dan/KoPP" pin that Atlanta foodies can wear out to restaurants and such and so be able to recognize and connect with each other outside of organized events. Often when I'm eating at the latest hotspot, I'll get the sense that someone in the next booth is a fellow forum dweller, but it can be awkward saying hello without verification of that connection. Dan knew so many folks, and every time he and I ate out together, he'd introduce me to someone new. So this would be a way to keep that legacy alive.

Missed me! I was the funny looking one with FG. Congrats to you, Hrothgar, and your blushing bride.

In lieu of tossing down Belgian brews midday, FG and I stopped at Patak on the way home and loaded up on meaty goodness, including rwcohen's beloved smoked liverwurst and my fave corned beef. KoPP would have approved.

Egregious omission corrected! Leave it to me to sit right next to you and still leave you off the roster. ::) It wasn't the St. Bernardus, I swear.

And thanks for the congrats! Methinks I'll make a formal announcement in a separate thread.

Sorry to miss saying hello to Barnum and Hrothgar. I was wondering who was sitting next to FG and the Scientist but whoever it was was gone from the table by the time I stopped by.

I remember the chole incident at Dan's as well. We had just started reading the AC board a bit before that and it was our first time meeting any board folks in person and we were a little nervous, or at least I was. That was a great ice-breaker!

I have one Dan-related incident that I want to share. I first met Dan as a friend of friends and I've known him for probably close to 15 years. We shared our love of all things food-related, and over the years we have had him over to dinner and parties a fair amount. Pretty much everything we did with Dan involved food! But we never talked about any food boards. So, about 8 years ago, I was poking around online and I stumbled onto AC and the great pictures of Soto's food posted by some guy with the moniker of "KoPP". We happened to go to Soto with Dan shortly after that and I mentioned the AC site and the fact that this guy named "King of the Pig People" was posting some great pictures of the Soto food (it was during Soto's last, great, fixed-price phase). And Dan looked up from his food and he said "I am "King of of the Pig People'".

I'm glad to hear talk of a gathering. Today was a sad and difficult day and we should do some celebrating of Dan's life next time around!

Hrothgar, those are some fantastic ideas.  I am sorry to have missed today (as I expected, I had a pressing deadline to meet and would probably have been fired if I had missed the morning), but I would love to get together at Fox Bros. sometime to celebrate Dan's life.  And I LOVE the idea of pins to recognize each other!

On an unrelated note, though I haven't seen a post regarding the congratulations sent your way, I can guess.   :D  Good luck on this new adventure in your life!

Sorry to miss saying hello to Barnum and Hrothgar. I was wondering who was sitting next to FG and the Scientist

Sorry, had to rush back for a meeting that has taken weeks to line up.

I was certainly glad to see everyone and a nearly standing room only crowd.  As someone without many (any) real in-person stories of Dan, it was a lot of fun hearing all of Mr. Cohen's and Julia's.

I will admit that when the incense started swinging, I was wondering if there was any chance it was apple wood, or maybe hickory because that would seem right...

Sorry I couldn't find time for lunch with everybody. Perhaps it would have been better to skip the service and do lunch instead. I'd never been to a catholic mass and while I suppose Dan's family was comforted by all the ritual (and comforting the family is the point of a funeral), I was expecting a little more Dan-related stuff. Maybe a eulogy from somebody who knew him.

Barnum - I didn't know you were there. I wish someone would have pointed you out to me.

I did get a nice phone call from Lamar Thomas politely excusing himself from the service and lunch, he still loves us and thought a great deal of Dan Loker.

I also got a phone call from Stefan Bencik (Slovakia-Stefan's Off the Square), he too offered condolences and wished he could attend.  Stefan remembered back to the Christmas events that were held at Slovakia with Dan in attendance.

I also talked to a couple FAMOUS chefs from California that phoned in their condolences.

I am so sorry to hear of Dan's passing.  We met him this summer @ the Souper Jenny event @ Cafe Johna's.  We sat with him and his neighbors & others and enjoyed the evening so much.  He told me about this site & I joined soon after that night. He had so much dining/food info to share and he & my husband shared a lot of IT stories that night in addition to the foodie talk.
I also enjoyed his posts here.  He will truly be missed.  Wished I had gotten on sooner to find out about his service.

I hadn't met Dan face to face, either (or maybe just didn't realize it from all the years of beer events). But I really enjoyed what he wrote here and elsewhere. We went to Jenny's supper club that night (assuming that's the reference). I suspect my wife sat with Dan in the 2nd half of the evening.  It's a testament to him that he left so many friends with great things to say.

Hi to all of Dan's Atlanta friends. I'm Barb, one of Dan Loker's sisters and I have been following your posts ever since I inherited his computer. It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since that tragic, senseless accident that took his life. Over the past year it has been a great privilege to eavesdrop on your remembrances of Dan. You represent a part of his life that none of us in his family knew about. We are all so grateful that you were there for him to help him enjoy life to the fullest. The memories you share were an important part of his life. Thanks, especially, for the pictures. They mean so much.

Dan was a great guy. I enjoyed meeting him in person after reading his posts for a couple of years. We had group gatherings at Frank Ma's two locations and he shared a taste of the beer he was drinking at one of them. I still remember how it tasted of chocolate and coffee and was way hopped up.
