Title: New Top Topics & Recent Posts Display
Post by: mikeamor on July 10, 2011, 09:08:13 AM
Nice feature but would like to be able to collapse or turn off the display of these two new items as they take up a full screen and you have to scroll by them on every single screen now to get to the actual content.  Even posting a message is preceded by these two new display items.
Just my $0.02  ;)
Thanks.

Added Observation: Also in the interest of screen real estate, you might want to consider placing all the social media buttons in a single line at the bottom of the messages.  Kind of a "Social Networking Bar" if you will.  Right now they are also taking up a lot of space in their current arrangement.

OK.  So that's $0.04 now.

Thanks again for all your work on the site!

Not sure I like this as well as the old layout. Change always takes getting used to, but I'd like the Top Topics section at the bottom, too.

Ditto.  I read on my iPad and would prefer content at top and 'stats' at the bottom.  Guess we are up yp $0.10 now  8)

I don't find "Top Topics" very useful.  Just because there are more posts on those threads doesn't mean they interest me.  Mostly, I just use "unread posts since last visit."

On my netbook, this means I have to click twice on my mouse wheel before I see actual content. It's very annoying.

I definitely would like to see those two new sections collapsible and/or at the bottom of the page. Failing that limit them to the front of the forum.

Top topics are interesting to read once, not every time you login, and certainly not on every page. Recent posts are more valuable, but I still want the option of skipping them, and again I don't need to see them on every page.

We appreciate everything you do in this labor of love, GG CP and FB.

Looking better today, I believe.

I'm not liking this new layout. It's very cluttered and hard to read. On smaller screens (I'm here on a netbook or an iPad), three column layouts are terrible. I appreciate experimentation, but there's a reason the single column format for message boards is the most common.

I would prefer to be able to configure that stuff to be completely turned off.

You caught me learning the ins-and-outs of the different portal mods.  Once I realized that those items were displaying on all pages I relegated them to the home and or the forum pages.

You can hide the additional panels.

I've been experimenting with different templates.  You can easily change templates by using the template widget on the home page.  Please try a few and cast your vote in the poll (http://285foodies.com/forum/message-board-notifications-and-news/site-theme/msg22931/?topicseen#new).

I agree.  The "Share This" mod was taking up a lot of space.  I switched to a different FB/Twitter mod and Google +1 mod.

I switched back to EzPortal.  I think it has a cleaner look than TinyPortal.  The portal is mainly for the home page and future stuff.  I will try to minimize the changes to the forum itself.

Something seems to have changed since this AM.  How do I see the list of forums grouped by category?  Used to get it when I clicked on 285 Foodies breadcrumb.  Now I just get the recent posts.  Help??

Same here - before there was a "forums" tab to see all of the categories.  I liked it better that way.

Looks like something is covered by the Home tab - could be it.

I did too, I can't say too much, I've been off "playing" with my two grand daughters for four days while Brian has been racking his brain trying to figure out how we all like it and how it works best.

I too like to see all of the forums when I hit "Home"...  rather than what I am seeing now...

Nope.

If you see a gap between the Home and the Help buttons, put your selector on the stub between them and click - that's the Forum button. Looks like its either been hidden or a formatting error.

Same with the links button between calendar and members.

Sorry folks, I'm not sure what happened but it appears that EzPortal got corrupted at some point today.  Please let me know if you are still experiencing issues.

Thanks,

I updated some old files this morning.  Perhaps that had some lingering effects?  That's my best guess.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled all if not most of the mods on the board.  Please post to this thread if you see any more anomalies.

Thanks,

The default setting seems to be displaying the last post at the top of the thread, and everything after that in reverse chronological order. It's taken me all weekend to figure out that I haven't lost my mind.

You can change that in your profile settings.

Sure, but 99% of the message boards on the planet have the most recent post at the bottom of the page. It mimics the experience of reading the printed page, which is left to right, top to bottom. For English speakers, text presented any other way is disorienting.

Plus, if I'm a lurker without an account here, I can't change the default settings. I'm pretty sure we have a lot of lurkers here.
