I put a question mark in there, just in case a resto was remodeling or something of the sort. I am afraid though, it looks like Uncle Wong's in Vinings finally bit the dust. The owner was such a nice guy. I guess I saw it coming when they quit ironing their tablecloths and setting up all their tables. I did not park and read the stickers/notes on the window, but it did look empty from the outside looking in.

I have a questionable closed restaurant, too. I was trying to go to dim sum on Saturday with First Chin in mind, but they were closed when I pulled up. Are they closed for good? Or just closed for lunch?

Anyone know?

A couple of months ago, Hong Kong friend told me that the latest in a long line of owners had some legal issues and had to shut down.  Not sure if that is permanent or not.

Benny's was a favorite of ours too.  We like Mike Miller and his staff, he is really a good cook himself and when he had the other guy from NOLA working with him (in the beginning), the food was way good.  I still have his email address, I should/could drop him a note and see what's what?    I thought he was only closed for lunch?

When I dropped by, there was a yellow letter from a company that rented kitchen equipment claiming their stuff was inside and they were legally claiming it. I looked again last night ca 9pm or so and saw no light on of any kind. I'd write. If Mike has plans to restart the restaurant .. anywhere .. I'd like to be around when it opens.

I can't help but think Benny's was hard hit by all the construction on 78, and the general reluctance of the ITP foodie crowd to eat OTP. Would he still be here if his restaurant had been on Buford Highway?

Really good brunch spot? Good bagels? Cheaper lunches to attract the DOD folks?

Truth be told, the biggest problem for Solstice was that the food was really pretty bad - lots of weird flavor notes. I fear that Painted Table Cafe is suffering from the same mediocre-to-bad food problem.

Nine has been closed since late summer, I'm told. Apparently owners have taken over Clay Cafe just up Canton St. a ways and renamed it Street Cafe.

Fused (in the old Magnolia Cafe space) on Canton also has closed.

Weren't they run by the same folks?  I have never been impressed with their food or the 14 year olds that seemingly run the place.  Evidently everyone else didn't think very highly of them either.  In my opinion they have always been a major drag on the restaurant quality in the area.

The last time I went to Magnolia Cafe was when I was served a turkey sandwich on a semi-stale roll with meats that were on a level lower of quality than what I could purchase at the Kroger deli and some chips shaken out of a Lay's bag...  Oh, and I think I was charged $9 for it.  And to pay for that $9 sandwich I had to go and find one of the 14 16 year olds to take my money.  I had to wait for the 2 girls behind the bar to stop talking and giggling to ask them for my bill.

Granted some blame can be placed on the economy I suppose but if you're serving good food, then why have you had to close the last 2 restaurants you've opened in that location?

Where's that Gordon Ramsey when we need him?

For me Solstice and Painted Table suffer(ed) from the one too many ingredient syndrome.

They could probably fit in one pool table for DH and also get Luce (the woman who spends her life in a plexiglass box) from the market on the corner to make up a batch of her tamales (amazing, delicious)

Does anyone know how long 88 Tofu House on Buford Highway has been closed? I just noticed it today, and I swear I might be having a brain fart, but I don't remember anyone announcing that it closed, and I think I drove by it fairly recently and said to Scientist, "There's 88 Tofu House. It must be closed now. No, wait, there are a few people in there, but very few."

Well, it's kind of crap news that it's gone, since I've been trying to introduce Scientist to all of the really great restaurants up and down Buford Highway each week when we visit, and that one was somewhat lower on the very long list, but it was on there. Dang.

Catching up a few that I don't think have been mentioned in the last couple months (in more or less reverse chronological order)...

Little Vita on Peachtree in the former Mick's location.  Space will reportedly reopen as The Thirsty Dog Tavern by the same owners.

Chick-Fil-A in North Dekalb Mall.  You know times are tough when these guys can't make a go of it.

Quiznoz and Wingnuts across from Ga Tech on N. Ave.  Reportedly they got the boot because the school wants their space to build a student/faculty dining hall.

Painted Table Cafe in Grant Park

Mosaic Middle-eastern cafe on 14th St near the mosque.  (I'm hoping they may re-open after remodeling to make room for the Subway shop that has taken some of their previous space.

All Star Pizza on 14th & State - replaced by A Taste of New York pizza, subs...

Joia on Crescent St, reopened by same ownership as Enigma.  Not much seems to have changed but the name.

Cafe Cliche on W. Ponce in Decatur.  Survived less than a year.

Aquaknox on Peachtree and Piedmont

Solstace Cafe in Grant Park

Avra Greek Taverna on Juniper St

Mitra on Juniper St

NEO in the Mansion hotel (now open only for breakfast and special events)

The German Bakery in Decatur (after 48 years in biz)

The Pharmhouse on Decatur Square

The Avenue in Sun Trust Plaza

Tilt Coffee in Castleberry Hills

Irish Bred Pub in Underground Atlanta

I don't think so, but my opinion is based on knowing that the owner - the Persian guy, for those of you who are familiar with him, but I've only met him a few times - has been the same through most of the incarnations of that spot, and I think he even owned it when it was Jalapeno's, which was the only good idea through the whole string of different concepts.

I can only speculate as to why he kept trying to reinvent that space over and over again. It could have been a tax write-off for all I know, or he really could have just had that many bad ideas in a row. He did seem to legitimately think that the tapas theme was going to work, as it was the trend when he made that change, but I have no idea why he went the "island food" route.

Now that the space is for lease, it would be nice to see what an entrepreneur with some decent restaurant business sense could do with that spot, because it's a great location.

Aurora Coffee will be closing their flagship Virginia Highland location soon (not sure of the date, but there's an 'available' sign on the building.

Bobby & June's Kountry Kitchen will close at the end of April after many, many years.  It's been for sale ($3MM in case you have some spare change) for a while, but I think he's just ready to retire.

The Northlake one had been in business since around 1982 or so.

wow....what's going on with the Northlake area? the Taco Bell next door closed a few weeks ago. how does a Taco Bell close??

I was sad when the Crescent Moon closed over at the mall in the old Farrell's/Ruby Tuesday location. you can't get that Chicken burger anywhere else.
haven't tried the new place that just opened up there yet.

Indeed, the flagship restaurants for fine dining in the area are the Red Lobster and Blue Ribbon Grill.  We ate at the 'Seasons at Northlake' a while ago, I got an omelette, and it was fine.  Menu was the exact same as the Crescent Moon.  They had a few cakes in the pastry fridge, but I don't know if they were made on site.

Crescent Moon had a good vibe and energy 3-4 years ago, before it was sold to some con-men.   The new place is probably not having an easy time re-capturing that vibe.  If you've got kids, the Stevi B's hits the spot every so often.  Mostly, we head to the Buford Highway, or San Pancho.

Fuddrucker's filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy recently, so that may have a little something to do with the locations closing.

Yeah, that's a shame. I used to like Fuddruckers when they first opened, but it seemed they got cheap on the meat they put in the daily grinds. They were, however, the first chain to grind beef in-house.

Well, it's a restructuring bankruptcy, so maybe they'll emerge from it a leaner company (pun most definitely intended).

I noticed this last week when I stopped by the Office Depot. I figure with dumpsters already outside they must be renovating it into something else right away.
only ate there once and went for the sushi rather than the table cooking. sushi was decent and they way they cut the beef tataki (very thin) was great.

Gem City was a guy coming out of the hospitality industry (recently a GM, but with a F&B history).  My guess is that this is not a good time for a first shot at running a restaurant.

Makes sense. But there was also Bubbalini's and some grill/bistro that opened to great expectations and was gone within a year. It's a vast wasteland out there, culinarily speaking.
Title: Re: Closed

Well, it would help if the food were really good.  I ate at Gem City twice before it closed and found it to be the standard (boring) lunch food.  However, people WILL support a good place.  Dave Poe's BBQ and Gabriel's aren't hurting at all in that area, and not much further down the road, West Cobb Diner is doing a gangbusters business.  The difference is that these three are serving quality food (and offer a good value).  West of the square is not a "trendy" resto part of town, by any means, but there are plenty of people living and working in that area who are always on the search for a good meal, myself included. :)

As I popped in to one of the chain/franchise hair cutting places I thought I recognized the woman who was walking me back to my chair.  In fact I remembered her son telling me she was cutting hair when he was running the restaurant.  It was Phuong Le of Pho '79.  She had to close but plans on opening again after a break.  Plans on going back to Buford Hwy.  The Winters Chapel location, though less than half the rent, was just not a good space for a restaurant.

http://www.ajc.com/news/north-fulton/federal-agents-search-sandy-551270.html

Federal agents search Sandy Springs barbecue restaurant

Federal agents swarmed a Sandy Springs restaurant Thursday morning and conducted a search of the business. Law enforcement personnel from several agencies were at K.C. Pit BBQ at 6317 Roswell Road during what is normally the lunch hour.

A U.S. Treasury Department official on the scene told the AJC that the raid is a combined operation of the Internal Revenue Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The official, who did not give his name, said a raid was conducted earlier Thursday at the home of the restaurant's owner. The business license for the restaurant is listed under the name Jiles Johnson.

An AJC reporter on the scene said Sandy Springs police had cordoned off the restaurant and employees waited in the parking lot while agents conducted a search. At one point, agents began checking the cell phones of some of the waiting employees.

Law enforcement personnel watched as restaurant employees unloaded boxes and equipment from a tractor-trailer parked outside. The equipment was being taken into a banquet hall adjacent to the restaurant.

Ivan Roberts, who works at a bank near the restaurant, said SUVs and police cars were parked behind a nearby Trader Joe's market since about 7 a.m. Between 10:20 and 11 a.m. police began to roll in and personnel in green uniforms got out of the SUVs and entered the restaurant, Roberts said.

Most of the waitstaff quit a few weeks ago, but I do feel sorry for anyone who abruptly had their working life torpedoed. It has, however, been coming for a long time and was probably not too much of a surprise. I've had this experience myself, with a much beloved restaurant, and sometimes the best you can do is all you can do. They are an incredibly talented bunch of employees, and they'll find jobs relatively esily.

Just received the following e-mail, with the subject line "JOEL Brassiere Event."   :o

To our loyal customers,

As most of you have probably heard by now, JOEL Brasserie's last day of operation was June 25, 2010. As with many other restaurants, the current economic downturn was an uphill battle that we struggled with as well. Unfortunately, it was a battle we were unable to succeed in. The former JOEL Restaurant and later JOEL Brasserie was a true highlight for fine dining here in Atlanta. My hope is that we will be mentioned with some of the other great restaurants that made an impact on this city throughout the years. On behalf of the entire team, we would like to extend the most sincere, "Thank You." Thank you for your support and loyalty over the past nine years. We truly cherished every moment! Merci Beaucoup.

Best Regards,

Jennifer Groese

General Manager

So sad a day. Found out last night that Everybodys on N. Highland will close in December - a sushi restaurant will take over the space. I've been going there for years, and while the food has become somewhat monotonous, it was always my 'Cheers' spot. Nothing is happening to the Emory location.

The corner of Virginia and N. Highland has seen a lot of changes, with a lot more to come (from reliable sources). It looks like more restaurants are going to shutter in the area, which is sad, since it's one of the few neighborhood restaurant/bar areas that have stood the test of time.

Aaack!  After posting about Bay Leaf I decided I wanted Indian for lunch, so I went to my favorite place, Madras on L'ville Hwy, which is now...closed.  Sign on the front says Madras Woodland coming soon.  IIRC Woodland was the name of an Indian place in a little strip center across from North DeKalb Mall, which closed a number of years ago.

I saw yesterday signs on Windward that Logan is closing and having clearance/everything must go sales. I never had a bad meal there, just nothing notable. Now remember, I have pretty low standards.

At Global Mall, Chinese Rasoi was out of business.  The new restaurant (Chinese Dhaba) is still Chinese-Indian, but the food was not quite as good at CR was.  The Manchow soup needed to be ramped up with a little container of vinegar that was offered to me (don't know why it isn't just added to the soup before serving).  Manchurian cauliflower was not quite as deep and rich, but still worthwhile.

Title: Re: Closed

The Varsity Jr. thing, once I found out the real story, was kind of irritating. Haven't eaten there in years, mostly just use it as a landmark.  Generally avoid or go elsewhere for my grease fix.

There's been a lot of work put into planning for the future on Cheshire Bridge- to adjust the zoning to make it nicer and more pedestrian-friendly as stuff eventually redevelops. Varsity Jr was one of the businesses that signed on in support. The idea is to avoid more nonsense like various stuff the strip clubs have done over the years (24K had a full-building sign, the helicopters up the street, etc), and it has to apply to everyone.

Apparently, the Varsity Jr turned in plans to the City to redevelop it back in March. They were going to affect more than 60% of the lot, which means they wouldn't be grandfathered and would have to abide by the new zoning rules.  City returned a long list of comments on their very-suburban, car-oriented plans. Then nothing.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and the owner declares that the City is running them out of town and they have to close down. Of course, the news outlets buy this hook, line, and sinker. Our n'hood prez goes on camera, which is cut down to 3 sec ("love the food, hate the plans") and then she starts getting hate mail.

They never attempted to respond to the comments, to meet with the neighborhood, or to try to get any variances to the zoning. Instead, they used the City as an easy target to blame for their decision to move and let their longtime customers blame them. And off to Dawsonville.

Don't let the door whack your A$$ on the way onto 400N.

Tasting their products on the circuit, I don't doubt it..   Don't get me wrong, they produced above average BBQ, with some things better than average.   But their products against the BBQ circuit winners, --- it was obvious that something was missing ?

I admit to never having been in their commercial restaurant and giving it a try, but I have tasted their BBQ at 5 or more regional contests.

Not sure how I would feel about this type of article/announcement if I were a business owner.  First glance at the headline had me thinking they already closed.  How many people won't get pass the headline and just not go there anymore.  I guess I wouldn't be surprised if they end up closing sooner because of it.

Kessler changed the title of the article yesterday afternoon around 2:00 PM to reflect that.  Now it says "Relish Restaurant to close."

Kihma on Howell Mill rd. closed, and I just did a search to confirm that The Scientist and I did not write about it after we went. It's a shame, since it was good Moroccan food, as I remember. We got an appetizer, 2 entrees, a dessert, a bottle of Moroccan wine and Moroccan tea for something like $45, as a special deal.

Maybe prices like that were what caused them to go out of business, though I can't say they were very busy.

Sorry, didn't see that he had posted that, because I didn't notice that he had posted it before. I did a search for "khima" though.

Are you saying I'm a shill? I hope not.  ;)

Never mind, I just found the original post. Having trouble with the site today. Harumph.

Was Khima the place that also had a market selling local/organic produce and some North African (Moroccan?) items?  If so, my wife and I found the prices were just not competitive with other places selling the same sorts of things, though the owner was very nice and enthusiastic.

I plan to check out Tom's Folly soon.

Relish in Roswell is closing at the end of the year.  Surprised me because we had brunch there on Sunday and it was pretty crowded.  They are going to replace it with a family friendly Mexican Restaurant.  Hope they include the delicious pimento cheese fritters and Krispy Kreme doughnut pudding with espresso cream sauce.  Yummmm.

Field Good in Alpharetta (Webb Bridge and Kimble Bridge) has been sold. I heard this might be coming, but is now official. It was bought by Bite Atlanta, whom I know nothing about.

Here's a blog post about it from the broker behind the deal...

I saw no signs of life when I grubbed at Anna's today. Peaking in the window, looks like nuttin' has been touched from the Field Good days.

Spread the word on Anna's! I will say the service is friendly but sloooooooooooooow. Does that make it authentic?

Have to wonder if there has been a hangup on whomever was going to take over Field Good.

Also, wife went to BB's last week. Re: Milton Parkway location or Whatever Bridge Road it's called at that point: They said--again--maybe this weekend. Drove by today, still window papered up. Carly Simon is waiting on them.

I drove by on Wed afternoon & it looked like they were loading up furniture on flat bed trailer.

It also looked as though they'd taken the letters off of the One Star Ranch sign out front.

I thought to myself either they're closing or in the midst of a major remodel.

I still went there for an occasional weekend breakfast, used to be a regular for lunch when I work nearby eons ago.

From what I recall, they were planning to close a year or two ago because the center they occupy was set for redevelopment.

Still, 30 years is a long time for any restaurant.
Title: Re: Closed
Post by: Minerva on January 03, 2011, 11:23:39 AM
The company planning to redevlop the center reportedly was going to give them financial incentive to relocate while the construction was going on, then give them a space in the new center. But that has been on indefinite hold due to economy. Seems like the Skillet's owner just didn't want to raise prices even though his costs were rising.

This is the 2nd time I've seen people blame the liquor license fees. Am I crazy to think that $6-7k doesn't seem that bad? That's about $500 a month. It's a cost of doing business, just like property & worker's comp insurance.

It's easy to blame government prescribed expenses, but why can't you pay your expenses? There are probably other issues at hand.
Title: Re: Closed
Post by: omnivorous on January 11, 2011, 09:21:47 AM
"Not being able to pay expenses" seems like a straightforward reason to close :)
Restaurants operate on very slim margins.  I don't know how appropriate or draconian Atlanta's fees are,
but it seems reasonable to say $5k could close down an eatery.

Either that, or you know...the Grays.

Well compare to my former home state

There was a time not long ago when a license to sell liquor could fetch a a New Jersey township as much as $1 million.

Not so good in math, but that's a little more than 7K right?

Hold on.. Wait a minute! Cliff, I appreciate the words of concern but news of the demise of The Glenwood is greatly exaggerated. Yes, we are closed temporarily. And yes, our liquor license has not been renewed...yet. But several friends of The Glenwood have stepped up and it looks as if we'll have the funding to renew and move forward if we can come to terms- and I think we can. It was touching to read the kind words posted by your readers. And thanks for your concern. But failure is not an option. Cheers and see you all real soon. Dan Simpson, managing partner
Title: Re: Closed
Post by: bbq on January 12, 2011, 04:34:58 PM
there is generally more to the liquor license deal, most times, esp in this current era, some places may lapse in paying monthly taxes, at the end of the year the dept of revenue will not renew a license unless all back taxes are paid up, which is generally why you see alot of business go out at the end of the year, kind of the final blow...

i found going through the whole process of obtaining a liquor license to be not that big of a deal, we had more trouble going through the neighborhood committees than dealing with the city!

i am not saying this is the case with the glenwood, i do not know anything about them, but it is a pretty general problem. I dont think the price to renew is all that bad with the money you make off liquor.

Thought I saw that yesterday but I was going to go back today to make sure before reporting. Too bad as the owner was nice but with the odd location and so-so consistency it is not a huge surprise.

They were in the Medlock Crossing center at State Bridge & 141 where the big ol' Regal 18 Theater is.

From what I could discern during the commute drive-by, there was no paper of any kind or color on the windows, just a "For Lease" sign, so infer what you will.   ;D

I drive by it all the time. Closed about 2 weeks ago.  I doubt it was any worse than any number of other places.  One of it's problems is that it's entirely heinous from the outside.  Another is that as you get closer to 285 heading north on BuHi, I think that quite a few of these places struggle a bit as Buhi quickly turns into ugly industrial wasteland.

Another is that I never really saw reviews, coupons, articles about this place.  They should have tried harder to get some of the local blog/article writer types in there.

Oh well. Someone new will probably take it over eventually...

Had the opportunity to visit there during daytime off hours while I worked at A.S. Very interesting inside when the lights were on. Never did eat there though. I have been in the kitchen and had seen and talked to the folks who did the cleaning in the early mornings. Poor El Toro.  They were so sweet and earnest.  And had the biggest parking lot within miles.

They've been closed since the beginning of January, I think.

The original place was the Crazy Horse.  I think something of that nature could come back and do well.

Hell yes. What this neighborhood needs is somewhere where people can feel comfortable breaking a cue stick over someone else's head (I actually saw that at the Crazy Horse once). LOL

But I do think that a bar there could potentially flourish - it might need to be more like the old Dottie's. Or something trendy in that vein.

Anyone else remember Dottie pouring individual shots of tequilla into folk's mouths as they successfully, or not, did the limbo?

Was reading the AJC this AM, and saw that O.B.'s was closed. While I hadn't been down there for a while, it used to be a decent option for BBQ on the south side. I wasn't as happy with it the last few times, and since gas prices have put a crimp on my roaming around, it didn't come up as an option for a while. Looks like there's been a regrouping of forces, however...

Well I'm glad they regrouped and opened but why, oh why didn't they do it in Lilburn or Snellville rather than Austell.. I have to change money two times to get to Austell...   ;)   I have gone out of my way several years ago to stop by O.B.'s and bring back a bag of fried goodies, sometimes at the end of the day they were extra generous with the oysters on each order, and whoever they had in that kitchen could fry fish for me any day.

OB's is on the long list of places that franchised their way to irrelevance. Chick told me only the McDonough had the original owners and the others just had the name sold. Most most recent meal at the original was my worst ever there.

Yeah, I think the original OB's is still open. Just got some sandwiches from them on our way to FL in early March. I'll second that they were not as good as we remembered, but they were still far from bad.

I think that now that the 'cue bar has been seriously raised by the likes of Fox Bros and Community, OB's may just not be worth stopping at, except for sentimental reasons.

Field Good in Alpharetta (Webb Bridge and Kimble Bridge) has been sold. I heard this might be coming, but is now official. It was bought by Bite Atlanta, whom I know nothing about.

Here's a blog post about it from the broker behind the deal...

http://wesellrestaurants.blogspot.com/2010/08/atlanta-restaurant-broker-sells-another.html

Long delayed, there seems to finally be a sign that it is coming soon. They kept the catering, sammiches signs--or just have not yet removed. Perhaps a similar concept to Field Good.

I tried The Spot a couple of times this year.  I thought it was okay, in a cheap dive sort of way.

However, Rhea's is just a mile or so down Hwy 9 at Hembree and I think it's much better for a cheap, fast, independent burger joint.

Elaine's in New York is closing as of today after 48 years. The verdict from just about everyone, including the many regulars who love it, is that it was a fabulous social experience and reliably bad food. I can't decide whether the owner was a great restauranteur or a terrible one.

Sad.  Never been but a big fan of author Stuart Woods.

Stone Barrington will have to find a new place for dinner......

The well-heeled glitterati of New York will be forced to huddle over their computers, trolling Facebook for attention while consuming luke warm frozen entrees.  So sad.

Wow, that's pretty strange in terms of timing, isn't it?

I think Tifosi opened in early March.  The "concept change" to Poquitos was in mid-May.

This is after they totally renovated the building (which I am pretty sure I heard that they owned) to make it not look like a KFC.

This is what happens when people try to open a resto and don't have enough operating capital to keep it open til they start to make money.  A lot of times that can take up to a year.  I don't like to be a "self-promoter" but I have a page on my website specifiaclly FOR people that want to get into the biz but know little about what it takes to run a restaurant http://www.foodserviceresource.com/Research.htm

I agree with one of the comments that calls the area between downtown and midtown "no-man's land."  I could probably have walked to Dogwood, but the location was not inviting.

Over the years, I've had to trade in quite a few Restaurant.com certificates, and I've never had any trouble.  A couple of times, the restaurant was still listed on their site, as they weren't aware of it closing.  They didn't wait to confirm it or anything - the next day, I got an email with a credit to apply to another certificate.

GG>-  I agree Greg, they have been more than generous to me when certificates even a year or so old were no longer honored.  In a restaurant in LA. for example, they gave me credits and I bought more of what they sell.

I need to check those older certificates and see if they are still valid again.   ;)

Really? I've never had trouble parking at Lindbergh. You do know that you get 2 hours free parking in the Marta deck, right? I usually get a spot fairly close to the entrance and walk to any of the restaurants there with no problems.

Not sure what the issue is with restaurants revolving so quickly in that area. Chili's, Longhorn and Taco Mac seem to do gangbuster business there and the night clubs seem to do OK, but the smaller restaurants seem to keep closing. Not that there have been many great losses, of course, since no one has opened anything that I found to be very creative, but still.

Urban Flats has reopened, by the way.

I agree with FoodGeek.  All you have to do is take your parking ticket with you to any of the businesses and they will validate you for two hours (and there are two parking decks to choose from).  If you are going to Longhorn or Chili's they will valet park you for free (course you shoud tip the valet).

I go to Sip (http://siptheexperience.com/)* all the time to meet clients and get a coffee.  They have free wifi and Lindberg is an easy location to meet ppl from all over the city.

*I am not employed or affiliated with Sip, but I know April and I really like the place.

We went by last night and the sign on the door says they are re-re-concepting it as "Fickle Pickle 2" or something like that.  Another Fickle Pickle basically.  My wife's theory is since Canton St is getting nicer restaurants (like table and main) they are going to move FP to Pico and open a higher price resto in the Fickle Pickle spot.

I think they would be crazy to do that, but all the diners that can't get into Salt Factory or Table and Main have to go somewhere, right?

The only sure thing is the re concepting of Relish to Fickle Pickle (2), according to the sign on the door.

My wife was speculating on why they would have 2 FPs so close and came up with the Asher theory on her own, no basis in fact.

Burrito Gorilla in Johns Creek has closed. Seems that Del Cuore is doing very well and they want the BG building to be part of that concept somehow.

Recent e-mail from the owner indicates that BG is now a wine store. Bummin.  :'(

The What Now Atlanta article stated that the space was slated to become a new italian restaurant.  If that is true, the new owners are spending a lot of money on the space - I was over there last night and the place is gutted so someone would have to put in a brand new kitchen.  Call me pessamistic.......

Artuzzi's on Briarcliff closed a week ago

The Rita's by my gym at Piedmont and Sandy Plains has disappeared, and I only found out recently because I had a craving which went unsatisfied. I also noticed that the Checkers on Buford Highway is now closed, and another on Peachtree Industrial is also closed.

They're dropping like flies these days.  :(

Rocket 88 in Decatur (formerly -- like two months ago -- Johnny's Pizza). Not to speak ill of the dead, but with No. 246 opening on one side and Sapori di Napoli opening on the other, the sudden access to pizza worth eating forced this change into kinda sorta a sandwich place. Appears it didn't help. At least they gave Decatur a great mural.

Also in Decatur, Isabella's Cafe (near Ale Yeah! and Avellino's). In my experience the cuisine (South African inspired) was more interesting in conception than execution, but it wasn't terrible. They made a two-year go of it.

A few closures from Alpharetta and Forsyth...

Scootz Gourmet Grill in south Forsyth closed about a week ago after only a few months in business.

New York Butcher Shoppe in Alpharetta (McGinnis Ferry location) has closed. I think their Sandy Springs/Dunwoody store is still around.

Durty Kelly's Irish Pub, Main Street in Alpharetta closed about a month ago. At about the same time K Cafe on Windward shut down. This was a test concept from the folks at the Krystal chain of burger joints.

And the Cumming Fish Market has closed. This was a concept from the folks that brought you Sage, Spice and Northpoint Dinner in Alpharetta. IMO, a very poor location killed this place.

I always thought they were going to struggle in that location.  As much as we enjoyed the pizza at Celino's, we started ordering pizzas from Franco's down the road instead.  The one time we tried Belly's, we were a bit disappointed.

Mobeta either got hit by a car through the front door/window or was the victim or a robbery.  I live in Avondale Estates but was out of town when the incident occurred.  It is being repaired though and will be re-opening soon.

A few more closures in the Alpharetta area...

Yamato on North Point is gone. One of my blog readers says they are eying a spot in the nearly vacant stripmall across the street.

Woody's BBQ near the mall. No surprise here.

Tutti Frutti froyo on Windward (next to Smashburger) is no more. That makes at least three froyo joints in Alpharetta that have gone under recently. More to come I'm sure.

Scootz Gourmet Grill in south Forsyth closed about a month ago. They had pretty good crowds after opening, but people simply stopped coming.

RootsInAlpharetta got the scoop for us.  This is from his blog...

"Buford Highway comes to Johns Creek! Well, it’s not exactly Buford Highway but it’s close enough. China Inn has been an institution in Chamblee for thirty years. In October they closed their location on Peachtree Industrial due to disagreements with the landlord and increased rent.

Instead they inked a deal to lease the former Modavi restaurant at 11625 Medlock Bridge Road."

I wouldn't consider it a sad loss.  I used to think China Inn to be worthy but lost interest with other more interesting Chinese a mile or three east.  The barber shop will be the last establishment in the whole strip mall.

They will be in the old Modavi space on 141, just south of McGinnis Ferry. This is the north end of Johns Creek near the hospital, almost in Forsyth County. I drove by the new place last week. Crews are working inside but there is no signage yet for China Inn. No estimate on an opening date.

Rivals hot dogs in Loganville, Here is a note from the owner:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=
Rivals is Closed . I want to apologize to all my faithful customers and friends that I was so blessed to have encountered through that great venture . I'm sorry for how things changed the last 10 months of its existence. I'm sorry it went so far down hill in quality , cleanliness , respectability in our fine community , and on and on . Im so sorry . Jan it was voted best hot dog in the ATL . End of Jan 2011 I handed ...reins over to another party to Run , operate , manage , partner , or even own , depending on whom you spoke with LOL . End of Feb. Rivals received a U food score Then in July it received another U and finally 2 days ago it received a Third U from the heath Dept . Each time they closed it down this time they closed it until a hearing can be attended . I learned of a financial situation on the backside , the lease responsibility has been neglected as well to the tune of over 34 K . I haven't received any pmts myself in quite some time and other neglected bills are popping up every day . Wed I had the locks changed and Rivals served its last customer . Lesson learned . Rivals has been ran so deep in the muck I cannot turn it around even If I wanted too . This name is tarnished and is no more . My Dream was abused , My trust was abused , My family's livelyhood was abused . I have no expectations at this time but I do know the concept for Rivals all the recipes , the theme , the hellhound challenge all came out of this head and soul and were a success . That cant be taken away and I know I can return so don't count ole Charli down for the count just yet . One day One Year just maybe . I still hold Faith .

Sadly, it appears that Botekim Brazilian Bistro on Terrell Mill, which had recently converted to buffet-only (I knew that wasn't a good sign), closed sometime within the last week or so.  Their website is offline, no one is answering their phone, and their FB presence is gone.

I really liked that place, although we'd only had a chance to visit a couple of times.

stopped in once, it was good and a little different.  Ultimately, if they think ANYTHING is going to pick up business quickly in this little hidden away spot they're going to be disappointed.  Given the attitude I've seen at TF, I'm going to assume that nothing in this spot will produce up to expectations.

Alvarado's in Snellville.

I don't think their business plan was well thought out.  They came and went before advertising could make an impact and I didn't think a 24-7 take out window would steer folks to their eatery.

I would also guess that the square feet they were leasing was about 3 times what it needed to be.

Probably was just a matter of time.  Franco's was so good when they initially opened but then started have serious problems with consistency and went downhill from there.  Even more strange was the fact that the owner was always there during the slide, it's not like the place was being run by an absentee owner.  I think they must have had massive turnover in the kitchen and just didn't have any attention to detail...  We became so frustrated that we had to stop going.

That's part of why we stopped getting pies there as much.  The quality was up and down, while the service was never fast.  They could have really helped themselves out if they delivered too.

They and their sister restaurant, the alleged gastropub, were both just a notch above average at best. Gave it a try, but it wasn't good or close enough to give me any reason to return. I also remember the booth setup, relative to where the TVs were, was not well thought out. I also only made it when the Vito Goldberg's guy was cheffing. Never tried the new guy.

Decatur Metro is saying Carpe Diem closed after Service on the 23rd?

http://www.decaturmetro.com/2012/12/27/carpe-diem-closes/

Too bad, while I thought the food was never revolutionary, it was dependable and the patio was fantastic for lunch on a nice day.  It was also a nice place to go on a quick business lunch because it was never overly crowded (good for me, bad for them?) and relatively quiet.  Decatur is turning into a tough place for a business lunch with the loss of places like CD & Watershed.  The new openings (like 246) are simply too loud, or too fast-foodish.

sadly this is absolutely true but not because of lack of business. Spoon is owned by 2 sisters and their brother and the sister that has been the head chef since it opened (and is responsible for all the food including those incredible desserts) is moving back to Thailand to be with her husband. we learned this when we visited a week ago as my SO knows the chef and she sat and talked with us for awhile. the brother and other sister will continue to run the Eastside location and the chef will come back from Thailand a few times a year.
I really hope that they can keep the quality up. we had several dishes last Friday including my favorite, the rack of lamb which was absolutely stellar!!!

To me it never even looked open anytime I drove by!

A few months ago they switched from closing at 9pm to closing at 3pm.  I only made it over there a couple of times, but liked it: solid, high quality, sort of southern/diner type food.  I'm on their facebook feed and the crabcake burger they did a few days ago looked incredible.

It reminded me a bit of Crescent Moon's first few years at Northlake, before the second owners ruined it.

Dockery's Cafe in downtown Alpharetta has closed. They had been around for a very long time.

I'd been keeping an eye on these guys. The city owns this building and has plans to demolish it to make way for the new city center project. Most of the other tenants were signing new leases elsewhere. Dockery's decided not to reopen.

Saw this on Omnivore:

"Toscano & Sons, the authentic Italian market at 1000 Marietta Street on The Westside, has announced via facebook that it will be closing its doors on June 19. Noting a dearth in retail traffic during their seven years at Brickworks, the owners are currently scouting for a new location where their market and sandwich shop can thrive. Details as they arise."

That sucks.  We patronize that place often, as it's convenient to us and was a great addition to the area.  We prefer the sandwiches and salumi over Star Provisions.

Seriously? Without any question whatsoever the best in the metro area. Very recently, some major website or publication rated in No. 2 in the country "outside of New York." Social media implies the second location may have been some kind of franchise and not directly owned by the founders.

Hence, I wonder if the restaurant is actually closing or just the affiliation ending.

I had to break the heart of a friend who loves that places and meets several peeps for her gal's nights out often. I guess a friend of hers contacted the owner Mai, who said she and her daughter are looking for a smaller space in the area to re-open. But I'm sure we've all heard places that were going to re-open somewhere else and never quite did.

Liked it a lot when it first opened. When the horrible fire happened at Indigo, they brought over experienced and competent servers temporarily.

It seems once Todd Hogan left, the service was consistently derelict. I’d sit outside and see them laughing it up in the kitchen rather than doing their job. Also on any given day, a good portion of the menu wasn’t even available. “We don’t have that anymore.”

I flat out stopped going. The Roswell Davinci’s, East Roswell Taco Mac, and Slate are the top three places that I associate with clockwork awful service. Slate lasted longer than I thought. It’s a shame because I love the bar area and the food remained better-than-average even in the post-Hogan era, but menu roulette and a staff more concerned with socializing among themselves than working I think did them in.

Hemmingway's on the Marietta Square Marietta is closed for renovations according to the sign on the door. It says it will reopen mid-Jan. as a non-smoking, family friendly pub. There is nothing on social media or their website about the closure. It didn't look like anything was happening when I looked through the windows.

According to an email and the Facebook page, The Willys Mexicana Grill in Vinings is closed for renovations until Jan. 13. Willys is refreshing some of their older locations with their new look/salsa bar, so I'm pretty sure this will reopen around their predicted time. I eat there at least once/week and am glad as the location was showing its age.

The interesting thing is they are supposed to be the big restaurant score on phase two of Avalon. They claim they are looking for another location, but I have seen that movie so many times before.

They are going into the inman park project as Gu's Dumplings

Yeah, that was never in question. But that's a different project. Supposedly they are also looking to reopen the flagship Gu's Bistro with a smaller menu in a more upscale location, and it looks like that may be Decatur:

And now Woodfire Grill is closing on May 20th.   time for a "one more time" dinner.

To my esteemed Woodfire Grill family:
In 2008, Bernard and I acquired Woodfire Grill with Kevin at the helm. Together, Bernard, Kevin and I strove to create a culture of caring and empathy. A culture that values people over things, that values proper over convenient, grace over profit. For the first year, we struggled, and somehow made it through. Then, thankfully, for a couple of years, our volume of business easily afforded us integrity in these matters.

Though both Kevin and Bernard have parted from Woodfire Grill, I work ardently to maintain these values. My motivation to prepare wholesome food raised ethically and to serve it with love is resolute, and non negotiable. Sadly, for the last two years, revenues have decreased and no longer support the elevated service and cuisine that I am altogether committed to. My sustainable restaurant is no longer sustainable.

It is with great sadness that I announce that Wednesday, May 20 will be Woodfire Grill’s last evening of dinner service. I hope that you will join me for dinner in the next couple of weeks so that I may thank you personally for your support over the years.

I have overwhelming pride for the parade of talent that has cooked in this kitchen and tended this dining room. I wish to thank all of my co-workers who shared in my passion for enlightened hospitality. I wish also to thank all of my farmers and purveyors who supplied me with the noble ingredients that nourished all of us these nearly seven years.

Most importantly, I thank you, my guests. Serving you has brought me grace. This grace will always be with me and I pledge to share it everywhere I go.

Come on in for dinner, there is a pretty good list of wines that I’d like to get into.

Love,
Nick

Satay House in Alpharetta  :(  I loved that place.  One of my favorite eats in the area.

I'd meant to post this last month, but sadly, the best cheesesteak place in East Cobb (which may not seem like it's saying much, but I LOVED it) closed recently: Capozzi's Deli.  Apparently, the owner was closing to take a job with KSU's food service.  Don't know why or really understand the decision, but I'll have to travel a lot further to get my cheesesteak fix now.  I went three times in its final week.   :'(

Capozzi's Pizza & Pasta, next door, is still open.

Very sorry for the staff that was screwed by this but otherwise no heartbreak.  Never had a good enough experience to return to any of these places after trying a couple of them.  It will be interesting to see where (if anywhere) this takes the local restaurant businesses with changing diner tastes and employee/employer relationships.

Sobban closing 12/19/2015.  So sorry to see them go.  Always had creative and reasonably priced food there.
I wish Heirloom got better treatment with their BBQ facility.  They might not feel such a strong need to open in South Korea if they were real busy here with an opportunity to grow.

Apparently Manuel's Tavern is closing for a month and leaving their employees out in the cold just in time for the holidays. They will not get paid. Compare that to the Austin Chik-Fil-A that closed for five months, paid every employee their full salary and then gave them all a raise when they re-opened.

Remind me, which one am I supposed to boycott again?

is the CFA boycott still on? I thought we were over that by now?

anyhow, have no idea why MT is closing but it's not really fair to compare a $5.1 BILLION company to a local bar.......

edit: now that I've read more about it....here's the GoFundMe page if you'd like to help out: https://www.gofundme.com/manuels

Sad to say but Alfredo's on Cheshirbridge will close next week.

Waiter Rudy there is one of my favorite all-time waiters.    Good solid old-school approach to Italian food in the hands of Cuban owners, an icon in my Atlanta experience.

Sad to see The Cockentrice at Krog Street has closed.  Only had the opportunity to have one GREAT meal there.  Unfortunately for us, like their Hosea Williams location, getting there is always seems to be such an  ordeal.  Wish they were more convenient.  We'd certainly spend a small fortune there.  Wishing best to The Ouzts' as they move on!

Same from us.  We have always like The Spotted Trotter and Kevin himself.  We lean toward Rusty at Pine St. Market for most of those things that Kevin does provide but his reasons for closing Cockentrice are sound and admirable and I'm sure we will continue to see Kevin's name.
