Title: Blog host recommendations
Post by: KoPP on September 24, 2010, 06:31:33 AM
Thinking of starting up a small blog, and was wanting recommendations for hosting companies. Looking for a site where I can own my domain name, and where the blog software is fairly easy to use (since I'll be working on it at night/early mornings). Cheap is good, but not crappy. Thanks!

I'm sure there are others out there, but I use http://www.siteground.com/ for my hosting.  They have a $3.95/month - unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage, etc.  I've been very happy with their Joomla hosting.  Joomla is the CMS that 285foodies.com appears to run on.

I was thinking of either blogger or wordpress - GoDaddy has a good deal as well. I've set up wordpress before, but was wondering if folks out there had a setup that they were happy with that doesn't take 5 hours to greate an entry... ;D

If your host has CPanel, setup is a click away. I use HostGator for SEM and never a problem. Setting up with CPanel is so easy even a caveman can do it.

blogger is easy if you use the built in templates. I don't know CSS or whatever that stuff is coded in so i just used a template from them.
godaddy doesn't host does it? It's just domains i thought.

i hear a lot of ads for squarespace.com on my podcasts for super easy but super customizable web blogs and pages. They even had an iphone app to allow posts from an iphone to your blog

GoDaddy hosts any number of web-based apps. They also have a specific blogger offering.

The problems I've seen is that Blogger is free, but I can't use my domain (can't find any documentation on switching from the 'blogspot.com to xxx.com'). Others charge anywhere from 4-6 a month to host, but there's a lot of different packages. I'm more familiar with WordPress.

Yes you can. You can even buy it directly from them.

Settings>publishing

First option under "advanced settings"

Danke - I can get a deal on the domain through GoDaddy, so I'll probably set it up over there, then play with Blogger to see if it's what I want. Otherwise, I'll probably look at WordPress.

The only caution with wordpress is you can't have ads and you have to pay extra to keep their ads off. I have my blog on Squarespace and really like it.

Hence a host like LimeDomains or Host Gator, no external ads, nothing extra to put your own on ads. No hidden costs, just the hosting fee.
