Hey, thought I would join in the action here.

I have been a big fan of Paste Magazine for nearly 2 years now. Basically you get a CD every month, online, with about 20 songs from various bands that you would probably never hear on local radio. Some really good music for the most part. The last one Number 57 was especially good.
Title: Re: What's in your CD player?
Post by: Otto on November 04, 2009, 01:07:41 PM
I think I'll check Paste out.  Two questions:

1.  Are the bands balanced between male and female?  Most compilations tend to be heavily male, unless it's a compilation of 20 Celebrated Female Artists of the 60s, for example.

2.  Are the songs from different time periods or contemporary?
Title: Re: What's in your CD player?
Post by: AndyBoy on November 05, 2009, 11:40:58 AM
I took a quick look at some of the play lists from Paste and there is a good representation of female singers. Can't really tell about the bands. The music for the most part is contemporary and current bands. Certainly not the kind of stuff you hear on local radio, more like a college station playlist. Whoever is making the selections has a good ear. Paste was having some serious financial problems but they have gotten past that I think. It is a bargain for $20 IMO.

I pulled out my one and only Christmas CD for the holidays.  Christmas Caravan by the Squirrel Nut Zippers has to be among the coolest of the genre because it eschews the done-to-death standards you hear on every other release (the only recognizable song is a Dixieland instrumental version of Sleigh Ride) and does arrangements in many different styles.  There's 40's pop, 50's rock, blues, country and their signature hot jazz sound.  The musicianship is a little ragged, but I like that unpolished quality.  It sounds authentic and human compared to the autotuned drum beats on the radio today.

Yep, that's about how old that sansa was... cost a fortune for the 8GB at the time, but was still much much cheaper than the IPOD.  Matter of fact, have a 8GB IPOD in the box that I got as a gift last May and have absolutely no interest... just not much of an interest if following the crowd...

I've got 3 Sansa, an 8gb clip that goes in the car a fuze and a 260. I refuse to buy an ipod of any kind because I don't want to ge governed by itunes. I may be wrong but that's the way  feel.

I'll bet the 8GB cost a fortune.  I went middle of the road with the 4GB.  Was looking at the Ipod shuffle but didn't like that you were restricted to their ear buds because the controls are on the cord to the buds.

Rwcohen, didn't you claim to be not a techno-geek in another thread?  How many technologies can you mix in there with ripping an audio book to mp3 to cassette to radio to phone, via bluetooth, to radio?

I was referring to Twitter. I still just don't get it. As far as technology goes, I consider myself "dangerous" meaning I can screw up a machine and more than likely need to call tech support. Now if I can just get my puter to accept my printer.......

Feeling very 60s this week:

Jimi Hendrix and Cream

Anyone catch Jimmy Fallon last week (Wednesday)?  Kenny Wayne Shepherd was playing with the band (The Roots) using Jimi's famed Woodstock Strat: easily one of the most famous guitars of all time.  It hasn't been played in public in over 40 years but the Hendrix folks allowed KWS to use it on Fallon's show and at one of the Experience Hendrix shows last week.

Brian Burns, Guy Clark, Gary P Nunn, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jerry Jeff Walker, Chris Wall, Billy Joe Shaver, James McMurty, Jamie Dale Gilmore, Flatlanders, Joe Ely, Lyle Lovett, Los Super 7, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Robert Earl Keen, Rusty Wier,
Rodney Crowell, Tom Russell and a few more. Although Nanci Griffith lives in Nashville she is from Austin and has done some great duets with Tom Russell, so I included her on my list. Don't know if Rodney Crowell and Guy Clark still live in Nashville or not, but they are from the Houston area and sing and write about Texas.

I remember seeing JJW in Austin in the early 70s back when the Outlaw movement was just getting started. I guess if he's lived there for 40+ years we can call him a part time Texan. You're right, he is originally from NY state. Tom Russell is originally from the LA area. He has made El Paso his home for years.

Funny, ELP has not left my play list since the days of King Crimson, Atomic Rooster and The Nice gave us the brilliance of this magnificent band.
I think that Keith Emerson turned more young pianists (myself among them) onto modern composers than any music class. You bet I beat up
a Hammond B3 and rigged pianos with chains and tacks to get the sounds he made.
Also new to my player is the new PJ Harvey: Let England Shake and the Drive By Truckers: Go Go Boots with bonus EP.

Heard them playing with Mumford and Sons and Dylan on the Grammys.  Never heard of them before, but went out and download the album.  Been on repeat since for me.  I will say the disc doesn't do justice to their live performances found on Youtube.

Been listening to a lot of Texas country lately. Asleep at the Wheel, Chris Wall, Lyle Lovett, James McMurtry, Joe Ely, Tom Russell, Flatlanders, Jamie Dale Gilmore. Although he doesn't fit into the Texas country category, Ian Tyson is fantastic. All the above makes me want to grab my Stetson, hop into the pick up, go into town, get a beer and do a little two steppin'. Since this is a foodie board, better mention having a good CFS or Frito Pie while I'm in town to absorb some of those Shiner Bocks or Lone Stars.
If you want to listen to some good Texas folk music, try Brian Burns and Tom Russell.

Jerry Garcia passed away 16 years ago today.  I went digging through my old bootlegs and found this:

Legion of Mary @ The Bottom Line  - New York, NY - 4/9/1974 (early show).  This is a "matrix" recording.  Two separate sources, an audience and a soundboard, were mixed together.  In this case, the end result is amazing.  I can only imagine that this is what it sounded like at the venue.  The soundboard provides the clarity of the PA, while the mics pickup the acoustics of the room and the audience.

"Murder Kroger"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHbziqRdNC8

Murder Kroger Lycrics:

down on ponce where the call girls roam
and the homeless trannies won't leave you alone
just a block or so past the Clermont lounge
sits the deadliest grocery store in town
it’s a good place to go if you wanna buy crack
but if you go there for groceries you may never come back

(CHROUS)
It’s murder
Murder Kroger
It’s murder
Murder Kroger

It’s a grocery store with a deadly twist
You’ll get shot in the head for your shopping list
Murder Kroger

it’s the worst place to shop in all of Atlanta
you could lose your life over twelve pack of Fanta
When you leave your car don’t forget your mace
unless you wanna be stabbed in the face
by an angry bum with a switchblade knife
I hope those hot pockets were worth your life

(CHROUS)

The odds are good you won’t come back alive
and your friends will all hear about it on Fox 5
Murder Kroger

It’s murder Kroger
It’s murder Kroger
It’s murder Kroger

Speaking of videos, I ended up buying the Lumineers album as well as Of Monsters and Men album from watching a couple of their live sets on YouTube.  And when you are on YouTube and need a lift up from all that troubles you in the world, do a search for PS22.  A couple of those kid's performances later and you can't help but feel a bit better.

Well, not in my CD player, but playing for all to hear on the back porch speakers. To coin a phrase from Mr. Rogers: "Don't you want to be my neighbor?"

Iron Butterfly, Inna A Gadda Da Vida, 1968, 17 minute version.

I wonder how many in this group actually remember the 17 minute version? Or have even heard of Iron Butterfly?
Oh hell yeah!!! I wouldn't complain if I were your neighbor...

It was on KMET Radio when I was growing up in the LA area that I first heard Iron Butterfly, and as they say, the rest was history!

Also saw Dr. Demento live, in the rain at the closed at the time Santa Monica Pier (and helped move his stuff into a closed building so he could finish the show). The Doctor Is In! Great stuff on his program...
