Athens Options
« on: May 28, 2010, 04:46:17 PM »
I have to give a recommendation for lunch in Athens tomorrow.  Odd that being in ATL for almost 20 years now, still have never made it to Athens.

Any good suggestions?

Thanks!

Five & Ten certainly looks nice, though not open for Lunch.

Not open for lunch on Saturday, but I DO want to try Farm 255 one of these days.

Not sure, but maybe The National is the best option for a weekend Lunch.

Though if it was breakfast/brunch, I'd be tempted to try Mama's Boy.

Of these options, DEFINITELY The National. Trust me.

And for something very tasty, and a bit more casual with a lovely patio setting beneath the trees, you might consider Big City, but you didn't hear that from me...

The National is a good restaurant. Even when it is not so great it is still very good.
I have had one lower level meal in 5 times dining there which is a great average.

The National's good...but I love Last Resort Grill.  Haven't had many good experiences at Five and Ten. We want to like it, so we try it every six months or so - but, for us, it's just blah.  But it's very popular, so we must just be missing something.

Although it's new, try Chef Lamar's Iron Grill.  Check out their website.  Really good.  Can't wait till they start doing their Sunday Brunch. The preview menu on the website just looks incredible.
Blah, whatever.

I wish I had read about Chef Lamar's last week but I just joined. The wife and I ate at Last Resort last weekend and it was fabulous. Next time we will hit Lamar's and give it a go.

The Last Resort is mediocre at best. The menu is boring, the ingredients merely okay, the execution often amateurish, and of course it appeals directly to that vast pool of college kids we import from Cobb County every fall, as well as to their parents and to other older, monied Southern folk who dine often at chain restaurants and who wouldn't know skate wing from a skateboard, or sweetbreads from a breakfast pastry.

Five and Ten is a world-class restaurant serving some of the best food in the Southeast. The menu, ingredients and execution are on a par with the best restaurants in California or France, the atmosphere is unpretentious (if sometimes a bit loud on a Friday night), the service impeccable (most of the time), the food often moan-inducing.

YMMV. But there is, often, accounting for taste, contrary to the old saying.

Any updates on Athens? Need to be there 2 nights training for my job.  I'd be willing to go all out one night.  Are the main ones mentioned here still the best?  Any suggestion for the other place to eat?  Hole-in-wall, ethnic, etc?  Thanks!

If you've never been -- Five and Ten is a must in Athens.  His other restaurant is also excellent -- The National.

I've always had a great meal at Cali N' Titos.  Casual, order at the counter and sit outside at picnic tables.  I think they charge a small corkage fee, but 5 Points Bottle Shop is right near by and usually pick up some beer before heading over.

For breakfast, The Grit.

Watkinsville is just a short drive South, if you get a chance try Chops & Hops in downtown Watkinsville, good beerz, very good food and a neat vibe.

For the other place try The Sultan in Bogart. There's also a Vietnamese place that isn't half bad.
